Pie Crust

During the holidays or a special occasion, I make pies. To have a delicious pie, you have to have a wonderful flaky and delicious pie crust. It is honestly so easy to do and can be done ahead of time or have back up when your craving something sweet.

Pie Crust recipe

3 cups unbleached flour 1 egg 2 tbsp sugar 1 tsp salt 3/4 cup milk 2 sticks cold butter cubed

You want to ensure the milk, butter and flour are very cold. I usually place the flour in the freezer the night before.

Add the flour, salt and sugar and mix thoroughly.

Gradually add in your cold butter cubes.

Let the butter and flour mix for about 4 minutes. You are looking for a crumbly mixture. If you have small chunks of butter in the flour, that is perfectly fine. That is going to add layers in the crust when it bakes.

Now finally add the egg and milk, this is going to now make the dough hard since the ingredients are cold.

After about 30 seconds, the dough should be crumbly and hard.

Remove and place over a floured surface.

Lightly knead the dough till it comes together and forms a ball.

Place in the fridge for at least an hour. I like to do this in advance, so when I am ready to assemble the pie its ready to go and not in a rush.

When you are ready to use, divide your dough into half. This makes 2 - 9 inch pie crust sheets.

Form you half into a ball or disc, then roll out your pie crust with about a 1 ½ inch more size than your pie pan.

Roll your crust over the pie pan and adjust to the bottom of the pan and top.

Cut off any excess dough hanging over.

Place back into the fridge for another 20 – 30 minutes until you are ready to fill.

Bake using the directions of your pie recipe.

For example, I baked an apple pie using this crust for 50 – 60 minutes at 375 degrees F
